Official public sources worth knowing

County property records

The Citrus County Property Appraiser publishes property ownership, sales and parcel map information online. Buyers use it to see a parcel's boundaries and recorded sales history; sellers use it to check that their own records are accurate. If something looks wrong, contact the appraiser's office directly.

Flood maps and flood insurance

FEMA flood maps, viewable at the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, show how likely an area is to flood. FEMA also notes that most homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage and that flood coverage is a separate policy. Our Flood Zones, Explained guide walks through the basics.

Hurricane season

NOAA's National Hurricane Center describes the Atlantic hurricane season as running from June 1 to November 30. For home preparation ideas, read Getting a Home Hurricane-Ready.

State parks and wildlife refuges

Florida State Parks and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manage several of the county's best-known outdoor places, including Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, Crystal River Preserve State Park and Three Sisters Springs within the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. Check the managing agency's own website for current hours, fees and rules before you go.
