Crystal River is one of only two incorporated cities in Citrus County, the other being Inverness, the county seat. Its motto, "Home of the Manatee," tells you a lot about the place: life here is shaped by water, from the springs of Kings Bay to the salt marshes that run out to the Gulf. Kings Bay and the manatees
Over 600 manatees migrate to Kings Bay in Crystal River each winter, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1983 to protect them. Part of that refuge is Three Sisters Springs, acquired in 2010, where a boardwalk lets visitors watch wintering manatees. A 2019 partnership between the refuge, the City of Crystal River and the Southwest Florida Water Management District covers management of the property. History in the landscape
Crystal River Archaeological State Park protects mounds that were built and used from about the second century to the early thirteenth century. The park was established in 1962, and the site was designated a National Historic Landmark on June 21, 1990. It makes a good half-day for newcomers who want to understand how long people have lived along this coast.
Coast, marsh and open water
- Crystal River Preserve State Park covers about 27,500 acres of salt marsh, tidal creeks, mangrove islands and pine flatwoods along roughly 20 miles of Gulf coastline, with hiking, paddling and birding.
- Fort Island Trail Park is a county park with a boat ramp, fishing pier and pavilion, and is part of the Florida Birding Trail. Fort Island Gulf Beach lies at the western end of the same road.
Living near water: what to check
Waterfront and near-water living is a big part of Crystal River's appeal, and it brings homework. FEMA flood maps, viewable at the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, show how likely an area is to flood. Most homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage; flood coverage is a separate policy, per FEMA. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
